AWS to Acquire DuckLabs, Bringing DuckDB Expertise Into Its Analytics Business
Amazon Web Services has signed an agreement to acquire DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based company behind the popular open-source analytical database DuckDB, as AWS looks to strengthen its data and analytics capabilities.
AWS has announced a definitive agreement to acquire DuckLabs, with the transaction expected to close soon, subject to customary conditions. DuckLabs co-founders Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt will join AWS and continue leading the technical direction of the team and the open-source project. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The deal is aimed at combining DuckLabs' database engineering expertise with AWS's cloud infrastructure and analytics portfolio. AWS said the move is intended to make analytics faster, simpler and more cost-effective, particularly as companies increasingly rely on data to build AI applications and intelligent agents. Importantly, DuckDB itself is not being acquired: the project will remain open source under the independent DuckDB Foundation and continue to be available under the MIT license.
AWS and DuckLabs have already worked together on integrating DuckDB with AWS data services. The acquisition is expected to deepen that collaboration and potentially broaden the reach of DuckDB's lightweight analytical technology across enterprise data environments. DuckLabs' team will remain based in Amsterdam, while its open-source projects continue under their existing independent governance.
