Equinix Expands Clean Energy Strategy to Future-Proof Singapore Data Centres
Equinix is strengthening its renewable energy strategy in Singapore while investing in geothermal power, small modular reactors and new research partnerships aimed at making data centres more sustainable and resilient.
Equinix has signed its fourth renewable energy Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in Singapore in two years, partnering with Flo Energy to secure at least 11.5MWp of solar capacity from industrial and commercial rooftop installations across the country. The agreement includes an option to increase the capacity to as much as 50MWp over time. With the latest deal, Equinix expects its renewable energy portfolio in Singapore to reach a cumulative 215MWp by 2028, with its existing agreements collectively expected to generate around 250,000 MWh of electricity annually.
The company is also looking beyond solar power as data-centre electricity requirements continue to rise alongside AI and cloud computing. Equinix has committed more than S$9 million through 2028 toward research into alternative clean-energy sources, including geothermal energy and small modular reactors (SMRs). It is working with Singaporean universities and research institutions to investigate areas such as geothermal-powered cooling, hydrogen infrastructure and other low-carbon technologies.
Equinix is further planning a Co-Innovation Facility with the National University of Singapore at its upcoming SG6 data centre. The facility is expected to focus on technologies including fuel cells, battery energy storage, liquid cooling and digital twins, helping develop solutions for the growing power and cooling requirements of next-generation data centres.
