French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI has raised €3 billion in a Series D funding round, valuing the company at more than €21 billion. Announced on September 8, 2026, the investment gives Mistral additional resources to expand its AI infrastructure, develop advanced models and grow its international business.

The round was led by Samsung Electronics, alongside co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity. The company described the deal as the largest equity fundraising round completed by a European technology company.

Mistral AI Funding Targets Infrastructure and Research

The Mistral AI funding round comes as the company expands beyond developing AI models into building the infrastructure needed to train and deploy them. The company plans to increase computing capacity, strengthen frontier research and accelerate commercial growth across international markets.

Training advanced AI models requires substantial computing resources, including high-performance processors, data centres and reliable electricity supplies. By investing in these areas, Mistral aims to improve its ability to develop models and provide AI services to enterprise customers.

The funding also supports its strategy of building an integrated AI business that combines models, infrastructure and applications. This approach could give customers greater flexibility over how they deploy AI and manage their data.

Samsung and International Investors Back Mistral

Samsung Electronics' role as lead investor adds a major technology industry participant to Mistral's shareholder base. The investment also reflects the growing connection between AI development and the semiconductor industry, where access to computing hardware is essential.

Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity co-led the round. Other investors included funds managed by BlackRock, Advent and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, alongside existing backers such as Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz and Salesforce Ventures.

The broad investor base gives Mistral financial support across Europe, Asia and North America. It also highlights how AI infrastructure and model development have become significant investment priorities beyond the United States.

Sovereign AI Shapes Mistral's Strategy

Mistral is positioning its technology around the concept of sovereign AI, which allows organisations to retain greater control over their data, models and computing infrastructure. This is particularly relevant to governments and businesses operating under strict data governance and security requirements.

The company has expanded its international presence and reported serving more than 125 enterprises across 20 countries. Its strategy includes building additional computing capacity in Europe while developing AI systems for organisations that need control over where their data is processed.

The funding provides resources to pursue these plans, although competing with established AI developers will require sustained investment and continued progress in model performance.

What the Funding Means for Europe's AI Industry

Mistral's fundraising highlights Europe's ambition to build AI companies with the resources to compete internationally. The investment could strengthen its position in enterprise AI and reduce some of the infrastructure constraints associated with developing advanced models.

However, the size of the round alone does not guarantee technical leadership or commercial success. Mistral will need to turn the investment into reliable products, wider adoption and sustainable revenue as competition intensifies.
