Pixxel Raises $100 Million in India’s Largest Space-Tech Funding Round

Indian space-tech startup Pixxel has raised $100 million in a Series C funding round co-led by Singapore-based Temasek and UK space investor Seraphim, making it the largest single funding round raised by a space-technology company in India. The Bengaluru-based company said the fresh capital will fund its expansion beyond hyperspectral imaging into a broader business covering satellite sensing, Earth intelligence software, sovereign space systems and satellite manufacturing.

The round also includes new investors 360 ONE Asset and IMM Investment, while existing backers including Radical Ventures and growX Ventures participated again. The latest investment takes Pixxel’s total funding to $195 million.

Pixxel was founded by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal and initially built its business around hyperspectral satellite imaging. Unlike conventional satellite imagery, hyperspectral sensors capture information across a much wider range of wavelengths, allowing users to identify characteristics of materials and conditions on the Earth’s surface that may not be visible in standard images.

The company is now expanding that model into a wider Earth-observation and intelligence platform.

Pixxel plans new satellite capabilities

A major portion of the new funding will go towards Pixxel’s next-generation Honeybee satellite constellation. The company plans to extend its sensing capabilities into shortwave infrared (SWIR), while also adding synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and ultra-high-resolution optical imaging to its technology portfolio.

The first Honeybee satellite is expected to launch in 2027, according to the company.

Pixxel also plans to expand Aurora, its Earth intelligence software platform. Aurora is designed to combine data from different sensing systems and turn satellite datasets into insights that can be used for decision-making.

The company is also targeting government and sovereign Earth-observation missions. Its plans include developing satellite systems for civil, defence and intelligence applications, alongside expanding manufacturing capacity in both India and the US.

From hyperspectral imaging to broader space infrastructure

Pixxel’s latest funding comes after a period of rapid expansion. Over the past two years, the company has deployed six Firefly satellites, which it describes as the world’s highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral constellation, and has launched Aurora as its Earth intelligence software platform.

The company has also secured contracts with NASA and the US National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), while winning multiple iDEX challenges from India’s Ministry of Defence.

Another part of its expansion is a planned orbital data-centre demonstration satellite. Pixxel has also been selected to lead the development of India’s first public-private Earth-observation constellation of 12 satellites under IN-SPACe.

These projects give the company exposure across several parts of the space industry rather than limiting its business to satellite imagery. Its strategy now combines the satellites that collect data, software that processes it and the infrastructure required to manufacture and operate those systems.

Investor backing comes as Indian space funding grows

Temasek’s participation gives the latest round a major institutional investor, while Seraphim has continued to back Pixxel as the company scales its space technology operations. Existing investors Radical Ventures and growX Ventures have also increased their involvement, according to Pixxel’s funding announcement.

The round comes as private investment in India’s space sector expands following policy changes that opened more of the industry to private companies. Other startups, including launch-vehicle developer Skyroot Aerospace, have also attracted substantial private funding this year.

For Pixxel, the immediate focus is now on expanding its satellite fleet, adding new sensing technologies and turning the data generated from those systems into commercial and government intelligence products. The company’s next major milestone will be the planned 2027 launch of its first Honeybee satellite as it moves towards a broader planetary infrastructure business.
