South Korea’s Exports Already Beat 2025 Record as AI Chip Demand Soars
South Korea’s exports have already surpassed the country’s full-year record from 2025, reaching $709.4 billion so far in 2026, according to customs data released on September 5. The milestone has been reached just days into September, putting the world’s major semiconductor supplier on track for another record-breaking year. The biggest force behind the jump is the global demand for chips used in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Semiconductors now account for about 41% of South Korea’s total exports, making the country’s trade performance closely tied to the rapid expansion of AI data centers and computing infrastructure.
AI chips drive an unprecedented export surge
South Korea’s semiconductor exports climbed sharply during the year. Between January and August, chip sales rose 169.6% year on year to $281 billion, according to the customs data cited by Reuters. The surge has benefited the country’s major memory-chip manufacturers, particularly Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Higher memory prices and strong orders from companies building AI systems have given South Korean chipmakers a major boost. The scale of the increase is striking when compared with last year. South Korea’s previous annual export record stood at $709.3 billion in 2025. The country has now exceeded that figure before the end of the first three quarters of 2026.
China and US shipments also climb
The export boom is not limited to one market. South Korean shipments to China increased 76%, while exports to the United States rose 57%, Reuters reported. That growth comes despite wider concerns over protectionism and geopolitical uncertainty affecting global trade. Automobiles, one of South Korea’s other major export categories, have performed less strongly, with car exports declining by about 4%. The strength of semiconductor exports, however, has more than offset that weakness. The figures also underline how important AI-related demand has become to South Korea’s broader economy. The country’s August exports alone jumped 68.7% from a year earlier to $98.26 billion, marking the 15th consecutive month of year-on-year export growth.
$1 trillion export target comes into view
With exports already above last year’s record, South Korea is now on course for another major milestone: $1 trillion in annual exports. The country is reported to reach the mark as early as the beginning of December if the current pace continues. Only the United States, China and Germany have previously crossed the $1 trillion annual export threshold.
For South Korea, the milestone would underline the extraordinary scale of the current semiconductor cycle. The same AI investment wave driving demand for computing power is also increasing demand for the memory chips and other technology products that form a central part of the country's export economy. The challenge will be sustaining that momentum as trade restrictions, geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in chip prices continue to shape the global technology market. For now, however, South Korea’s export numbers show just how strongly the AI boom is feeding into the country’s industrial economy.
