TCS Plans $7.4 Billion AI Data Center Campus in Hyderabad
Tata Consultancy Services is making a major push into India’s AI infrastructure market with plans for a 1-gigawatt data center campus in Hyderabad, backed by an investment of up to ₹70,000 crore ($7.4 billion).
The project is being developed through TCS subsidiary HyperVault AI Data Center along with its partners. HyperVault has secured 264 acres in Hyderabad for the campus, which will be built in phases and is expected to become one of India’s largest AI infrastructure facilities once fully developed.
The scale of the project puts it among the biggest AI infrastructure commitments announced in India so far. Rather than serving conventional enterprise workloads alone, the facility is being designed around the much heavier computing requirements of modern AI systems.
Built for high-density AI computing
The Hyderabad campus will support high-density GPU deployments for AI training and inference. These systems require substantially more computing power, cooling and electricity than conventional data center workloads.
HyperVault plans to develop the facility for frontier AI companies, hyperscalers and other customers that need large amounts of computing capacity. The campus is also being designed around liquid-cooled infrastructure, which is increasingly being used for high-performance AI hardware because traditional air cooling becomes difficult as server densities rise.
The development will happen in stages, allowing capacity to be added according to customer requirements and changes in AI computing demand. At full scale, the site is expected to reach up to 1 GW of capacity.
Hyderabad strengthens its AI infrastructure position
The project adds another major AI infrastructure investment to Hyderabad, which has been building its position as a technology and data center hub.
For TCS, the move represents a broader shift beyond its traditional IT services business. The company has been investing in AI capabilities and infrastructure as demand for computing power grows among businesses adopting generative AI and other advanced systems.
The company has also been building HyperVault as a dedicated vehicle for large-scale AI data center development in India. The Hyderabad campus gives that strategy a physical foundation at a time when access to computing capacity is becoming one of the biggest constraints for AI companies.
A greener approach to a power-hungry industry
AI data centers consume significant amounts of electricity and water, making environmental considerations increasingly important as infrastructure expands.
The Hyderabad project is planned around green energy and water-neutral design principles. That approach is intended to reduce some of the environmental pressure associated with operating a large computing campus, particularly as increasingly powerful GPUs generate more heat and require more sophisticated cooling systems.
The challenge is significant. A 1-GW AI campus represents an enormous concentration of computing capacity, and keeping that infrastructure running reliably will require substantial power and cooling resources.
India’s AI infrastructure race accelerates
The investment comes as India tries to build more domestic capacity for AI computing instead of relying entirely on infrastructure located overseas.
The rapid development of generative AI has changed the data center market. Training large models requires huge clusters of accelerators, while the growing use of AI applications also creates demand for inference capacity closer to users.
That is creating a new infrastructure race involving technology companies, cloud providers, data center operators and governments. Projects such as HyperVault’s Hyderabad campus are aimed at supplying the physical computing layer behind that expansion.
For TCS, the bet also creates a new way to participate in the AI economy. The company can combine its existing enterprise technology relationships with access to large-scale computing infrastructure, potentially allowing customers to develop and operate AI workloads on infrastructure built specifically for them.
With 264 acres already secured and development planned in phases, the Hyderabad campus is set to become one of the clearest signs yet of how quickly India’s AI infrastructure ambitions are moving from strategy to physical construction.
