Tech Companies Turn to Argentina’s Patagonia for Massive AI Data Centers
Argentina’s windswept Patagonia is emerging as a potential new hub for massive data centers as technology companies search for locations capable of supplying the huge amounts of electricity required by artificial intelligence systems. Companies including OpenAI and Poland’s Green Capital are exploring multibillion-dollar projects in the region, while Argentine energy firms are also preparing sites for large-scale computing facilities.
Patagonia’s appeal comes from a combination of factors that are increasingly important to AI infrastructure developers: cooler temperatures that can reduce cooling requirements, large areas of available land, strong renewable-energy potential and access to natural gas from Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation.
The interest is also being helped by Argentina’s recent economic reforms and investment incentives designed to attract large foreign projects.
OpenAI among companies exploring Patagonia
OpenAI has already announced plans with Argentine energy company Sur Energy for a major data center project in Patagonia. The proposed facility could require investment of up to $25 billion and reach 500 megawatts of capacity.
The project would be designed to support advanced AI computing and would be powered using Argentina’s energy resources. It is one of the largest technology infrastructure projects proposed for the region.
Polish company Green Capital is also considering a major data center development in Patagonia. The company is looking at locations where electricity generation can be closely integrated with computing infrastructure.
Pampa Energia, one of Argentina’s largest electricity generators, is separately exploring a data center project in Neuquen province. The proposed facility could use as much as 500 megawatts of electricity from the company's nearby Loma de la Lata power plant.
The site is close to Vaca Muerta, one of the world's largest shale oil and gas formations, giving the project access to a major domestic energy resource.
Patagonia offers land, cooling and energy
AI data centers require far more electricity than conventional computing facilities because they use large numbers of high-performance processors to train and operate AI models.
That has made access to reliable and relatively inexpensive electricity one of the biggest considerations for companies planning new facilities.
Patagonia has several advantages in that regard. Parts of the region have some of the strongest wind resources in Argentina, creating opportunities for large renewable-energy projects. The area's colder climate can also reduce the energy required to cool servers.
Land availability is another advantage. Unlike densely populated technology hubs where suitable sites can be expensive and difficult to secure, parts of Patagonia have large stretches of sparsely populated land.
The region also has access to natural gas resources, allowing developers to consider gas-fired power generation alongside renewable sources.
Argentina wants to attract major technology investment
The growing interest comes as President Javier Milei's government seeks to attract foreign investment and expand Argentina's role in the global technology economy.
Argentina's RIGI investment regime offers tax and regulatory incentives for large projects that meet specific investment requirements. The government hopes such measures will make the country more competitive with established data-center markets elsewhere in Latin America.
However, Argentina still trails countries such as Chile and Uruguay in the development of large-scale data-center infrastructure.
The country's existing digital infrastructure remains a significant limitation. Patagonia has less extensive connectivity than established technology hubs, and new projects will require additional transmission infrastructure, telecommunications links and other supporting facilities.
Infrastructure remains a major challenge
Building a large AI data center is considerably more complicated than simply securing land and electricity.
Facilities require high-capacity power connections, reliable telecommunications networks and substantial cooling infrastructure. Developers also need access to equipment, construction services and skilled workers.
Patagonia's distance from Argentina's major population centers creates additional logistical challenges. New infrastructure will have to be developed if the region is to support multiple hyperscale facilities rather than isolated projects.
The availability of electricity is another consideration. Although Patagonia has significant renewable potential, much of that generation is located far from Argentina's largest population and industrial centers. Data centers could help solve part of that problem by locating computing facilities closer to energy resources, but dedicated transmission and generation projects will still be required.
AI infrastructure race expands into new regions
The interest in Patagonia reflects a broader shift in where companies are looking to build AI infrastructure. Rapid growth in AI computing has created demand for enormous amounts of power, pushing technology companies to consider locations with access to cheaper energy and fewer land constraints.
Argentina is attempting to use its natural resources to position itself as one of those locations.
Investors remain cautious, however. Some projects are still in exploratory or planning stages, and the country's political and regulatory direction could influence how quickly they move forward. Investors are also watching the 2027 presidential election and a proposed expansion of the investment incentive framework.
For Patagonia, the growing attention from technology and energy companies could eventually bring a major new industry to a region better known for wind, gas, agriculture and vast open landscapes. But turning those proposals into functioning AI data centers will depend on whether Argentina can provide the power, connectivity and infrastructure required to support them at scale.
