Uber and Wayve Launch London’s First Robotaxis With Human Safety Drivers

London has taken its first step into the robotaxi era. Uber and British AI firm Wayve have launched autonomous rides in the city, putting Wayve’s self-driving technology on the Uber platform for the first time.

The service began on September 3, with a small fleet of fewer than 20 vehicles. But despite the “robotaxi” label, passengers will not yet be travelling completely alone. A trained, Transport for London-licensed private hire driver will remain in the car to monitor the journey and take control if needed.

How Uber’s London robotaxis will work

For now, the service is being offered through UberX, Uber Comfort and Uber Electric. Some riders requesting these options can be matched with a Wayve-powered Ford Mustang Mach-E, with no additional charge for the autonomous ride.

Passengers will also have a choice. If they are matched with a Wayve vehicle, they can accept the ride or switch to a conventional Uber before the car arrives. The service will initially operate across London, although airports are excluded.

More than 140,000 London Uber users have already opted in to increase their chances of being matched with one of the vehicles. Inside the car, an interactive screen lets passengers start the trip and follow the vehicle’s planned route, with the interface available in 64 languages.

Wayve’s AI takes the wheel

The cars are powered by Wayve’s AI Driver, which the company says has been trained on London’s roads since 2018. Unlike autonomous systems that depend heavily on detailed high-definition maps or fixed, hand-coded rules, Wayve’s technology is designed to learn from driving experience and adapt to different roads and conditions.

That makes London a particularly important testing ground. Its narrow streets, heavy traffic, cyclists and pedestrians create a very different driving environment from the wide, more predictable roads found in some other robotaxi markets.

For Wayve, the launch is also the first time its AI Driver is being offered to the public. CEO and co-founder Alex Kendall said the company was proud to introduce the technology in its home city, describing London as one of the world’s most complex driving environments.

London is only the beginning

The Uber and Wayve robotaxi partnership dates back to 2024, when Uber invested in the British startup. The companies have been working towards putting Wayve-powered vehicles on Uber’s network in 12 markets around the world, with London becoming the starting point.

Uber is not limiting its autonomous ambitions to London. The company says it is working with more than 30 autonomous vehicle partners globally and expects to facilitate autonomous trips in as many as 15 cities by the end of 2026.

The London rollout will therefore be watched closely—not just as a new option for Uber passengers, but as a test of whether self-driving technology can handle one of Europe’s busiest and most complicated cities. For now, a human is still sitting behind the wheel. The bigger change may come later, if regulators approve fully driverless operations.
