UAE Commits $1 Billion to French AI Satellite Project
The United Arab Emirates is committing $1 billion to a French-led space and artificial intelligence project that will deploy 50 satellites capable of processing data directly in orbit. The constellation is being developed by French-American space infrastructure company Loft Orbital with funding from Marlan Space, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi-based International Holding Company (IHC).
Unlike conventional Earth-observation satellites that send large amounts of raw imagery and measurements to ground stations for processing, the new system will use onboard computing and AI to analyse information in space. The goal is to generate alerts within seconds when the satellites detect events such as fires, unusual activity or potential threats.
AI Will Process Data Before It Reaches the Ground
The 50 satellites will combine optical, radar and other advanced sensors with continuous connectivity and onboard computing. Loft Orbital says the system will be able to analyse observations while still in orbit, allowing AI agents to identify specific events and automatically send relevant information to users.
A potential use case is wildfire detection. An infrared camera could identify a heat signature while a satellite is passing over an affected area, with the onboard AI analysing the footage and sending the location to authorities without waiting for the data to be downloaded and processed on Earth. The system is also being designed for monitoring ports, energy facilities, airports, telecommunications sites and other sensitive infrastructure.
Mistral AI and Nvidia Join the Satellite Platform
French AI company Mistral AI will provide the artificial intelligence technology used aboard the satellites, while Nvidia will supply the computing chips. That gives the project a combination of French-developed AI software and U.S.-made processing hardware inside a satellite platform financed by the UAE.
The satellites will be assembled in Abu Dhabi through Orbitworks, a joint venture created by Loft Orbital and Marlan Space in 2024. Although the investment is Emirati-funded, the constellation will be controlled through a French-law company and will operate under French and European regulations because of the project's security implications.
First Satellite Launch Planned for October
The first satellite has already been assembled and is scheduled to enter low Earth orbit in October aboard a SpaceX rocket. Nine additional satellites are planned for launch in 2027, with the remaining spacecraft expected to be deployed over the following years.
Loft Orbital also plans to shift part of the launch programme to MaiaSpace, the ArianeGroup subsidiary developing a new European launcher, once it becomes operational. MaiaSpace is expected to begin supporting launches from around 2028, giving the project a future European launch option alongside its initial reliance on SpaceX.
French, European and Emirati Users
The initial constellation is intended to serve government and commercial customers in France, Europe and the UAE. Loft Orbital says contracts have already been signed with several government entities in France and the Emirates, although the customers have not been publicly identified.
The planned applications extend beyond environmental monitoring. The satellites could be used for detecting missile launches, tracking vessels near coastlines, monitoring aircraft activity and watching sensitive infrastructure. Because processing takes place onboard, users could receive targeted information rather than waiting for large datasets to reach ground-based processing systems.
The investment comes as France pushes to strengthen its position in AI and space technology while Europe works to reduce its dependence on U.S. infrastructure. The International Space Summit in Paris, where the project was announced, is focused on Europe's ability to compete in a space market increasingly dominated by companies such as SpaceX.
The project also builds on a broader France-UAE technology relationship established through a 2025 AI cooperation agreement between French President Emmanuel Macron and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. That agreement included plans for tens of billions of euros in Emirati investment in French AI infrastructure and data centres.
If deployed as planned, the constellation would move satellite intelligence closer to real-time decision-making, reducing the delay between observing an event and delivering useful information. Its progress will depend on the successful deployment of the satellites, onboard AI performance and the ability to scale the system across multiple launch campaigns.
