XPeng Starts IRON Humanoid Robot Production as Mass Manufacturing Nears

Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng has commissioned a dedicated production line for its IRON humanoid robot, with the first robot completing assembly and autonomously walking off the line in Guangzhou. The company says more than 80% of the line’s core processes are automated, marking a shift from building research prototypes toward repeatable robot manufacturing.

XPeng plans to begin mass production of IRON by the end of 2026, initially deploying the robots at its own stores and campuses. Formal market launches and deliveries in China and overseas markets are planned for 2027.

XPeng Brings EV Manufacturing to Robotics

The new production line applies manufacturing and quality-control systems developed through XPeng’s electric vehicle business to humanoid robotics. The company says the line was designed for high precision and flexible production, with automation covering more than 80% of its core processes.

For XPeng, the manufacturing capability is as important as the robot itself. Humanoid robotics has largely remained in the prototype and demonstration stage, and the ability to produce machines consistently at scale is one of the industry's biggest challenges.

IRON Is Built for General-Purpose Tasks

XPeng is developing IRON as a general-purpose humanoid rather than for one narrowly defined industrial task. The robot has 76 degrees of freedom across its body, including 21 in each hand, allowing it to perform a broad range of movements and interact with objects designed for people.

IRON uses three of XPeng’s Turing AI chips, providing up to 2,250 TOPS of effective computing power. The company says its Physical AI foundation model runs directly on the robot, allowing it to perform complex tasks without relying on remote operation and reducing the latency involved in sending commands to an external system.

Robotics Business Raises More Than $900 Million

XPeng is also putting significant financial resources behind its robotics expansion. In August, the company’s robotics business raised more than $900 million at a post-money valuation above $6.3 billion, in a round led by IDG Capital with participation from Gaorong Ventures and strategic backing from Tencent and Alibaba.

The funding is being used for robotics hardware and software development, Physical AI model training, data generation, production facilities and global commercial expansion. XPeng has retained control of the robotics business, which remains part of the wider group.

Commercial Launch Planned for 2027

The production-line milestone does not mean IRON is immediately available for consumers. XPeng's current plan is to begin mass production later this year, followed by initial deployments in environments it controls before expanding to external customers.

The company expects official launches and deliveries in China and overseas markets in 2027. XPeng has also said its monthly production capacity could be increased to several thousand robots by 2027 depending on market demand.

XPeng is positioning robotics as a second major growth engine alongside its vehicle business. With IRON moving into production and the company investing heavily in Physical AI, the next challenge will be proving that humanoid robots can move from controlled demonstrations to reliable commercial work at scale.
