Google Backs TeraWulf Financing for Anthropic Data Centre Project in Kentucky
Google has agreed to provide credit support to TeraWulf to help secure financing for a data centre project being developed for Anthropic in Kentucky. The planned campus is expected to deliver approximately 401 megawatts (MW) of critical IT capacity, with initial operations targeted for the second half of 2027.
The agreement, announced on November 4, 2026, strengthens the project's financing structure as demand for infrastructure to support artificial intelligence continues to grow. It also highlights how major technology companies are helping data centre developers secure funding for large-scale AI infrastructure.
Google Provides Credit Support for TeraWulf's Project
TeraWulf announced that Google had entered into credit support agreements connected to debt financing for its Justified Data Campus in Hawesville, Kentucky. The agreements support approximately $19 billion in contracted lease commitments with Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI assistant.
Under the arrangements, Google will provide contractual credit support for certain obligations under Anthropic's long-term leases. If Anthropic defaults on rent payments or faces an insolvency event, Google has options that include paying outstanding rent and assuming the relevant lease or, under specified conditions, paying a termination fee.
The credit support is designed to strengthen TeraWulf's financing position and improve its ability to secure long-term debt on competitive terms. The arrangements also include conditions under which the backstop can terminate if Anthropic or a qualifying affiliate achieves and maintains specified investment-grade credit ratings.
Anthropic Data Centre Campus Targets 2027 Operations
The Justified Data Campus is being developed to provide high-performance computing infrastructure for Anthropic. The project covers approximately 401 MW of critical IT capacity across three data centre buildings.
TeraWulf signed a 20-year lease agreement with Anthropic in July 2026. The contracted lease commitments are expected to generate approximately $19 billion in revenue over the agreement's term.
The company has also expanded its construction agreement with Fluor Enterprises, which will handle engineering, procurement and construction activities for the three buildings. The agreement establishes delivery milestones and expands the project's construction capacity.
Phased delivery is expected to begin in late 2027 and continue through the second quarter of 2028. Initial operations are targeted for the second half of 2027.
Big Tech Companies Support the Expansion of AI Infrastructure
Google's credit support reflects a growing trend in which major technology companies help finance the infrastructure required for advanced AI services. Building large-scale data centres requires substantial capital, reliable electricity and long-term commitments from customers.
Financial guarantees and credit arrangements can help developers secure funding by reducing some of the risks associated with long-term infrastructure projects. In this case, Google's involvement strengthens the financing framework behind a campus intended to support Anthropic's computing requirements.
TeraWulf is among the companies shifting from cryptocurrency mining towards AI and high-performance computing infrastructure. The company's Kentucky development illustrates how existing energy and digital infrastructure businesses are adapting to growing demand for AI computing capacity.
The project also demonstrates the increasingly interconnected relationship between AI developers, cloud and technology companies, and specialist data centre operators. As investment in AI infrastructure accelerates, similar financing arrangements could become an important part of bringing large computing facilities online.
