HSBC AI Institute in Hong Kong Set to Open in 2027

HSBC headquarters in Hong Kong as the bank plans a new AI institute

HSBC plans to launch its HSBC AI institute in the first quarter of 2027, adding a new research and emerging-technology initiative to its operations in one of its most important markets. Chief Executive Georges Elhedery announced the plan at Hong Kong Fintech Week on 2 November 2026, naming the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as the institute’s anchor academic partner.

The institute will bring together the university’s research capabilities and HSBC’s experience in financial services to explore applications of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. HSBC has not disclosed how many people will work at the new unit. The bank also plans to move the centre to Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis development when a suitable site there is ready.

HSBC AI Institute Builds on Singapore Expansion

The Hong Kong initiative follows HSBC’s decision in July to establish an AI centre in Singapore and recruit more than 100 specialists. The two moves show the bank is developing AI capabilities across multiple Asian financial centres rather than concentrating all of its work in one location.

The Singapore centre was announced with a focus on strengthening the bank’s technology capabilities. The Hong Kong institute adds an academic partnership to that regional strategy. Its collaboration with HKUST is intended to combine research expertise with practical knowledge of banking and financial services, although HSBC has yet to provide details of its initial research programme or staffing plans.

Workforce Training Becomes Part of HSBC’s AI Strategy

Alongside the institute, HSBC is expanding AI training across its global workforce of about 200,000 employees. The bank has around 28,000 employees in Hong Kong, making workforce preparation a significant part of its local technology plans.

Elhedery said AI would disrupt work and change the types of roles banks need. The training programme is intended to help employees adapt as the technology becomes more widely used in the bank’s operations. The institute’s research role and the workforce programme are related, but they are distinct parts of HSBC’s broader transformation effort.

Hong Kong Banks Accelerate AI Adoption

The announcement comes as AI adoption spreads across Hong Kong’s financial sector. Hong Kong Monetary Authority Chief Executive Eddie Yue said around 80% of banks in the city were already using AI or generative AI. The regulator is also preparing work to support the use of AI agents in finance while addressing issues such as testing, governance and accountability.

For HSBC, the new HSBC AI institute strengthens its presence in Hong Kong while adding to its investment in Singapore. The planned 2027 launch is still some months away, and the bank has not yet disclosed the institute’s budget, headcount or detailed research agenda. Its impact will depend on how quickly the academic partnership translates into technology that can be deployed in banking operations.
