Ommo Technologies Raises $30M to Advance Sub-Millimeter Robot Tracking
Ommo Technologies has raised $30 million in Series A funding to scale its magnetic positioning technology for robots and other machines. The Texas-based spatial intelligence company plans to use the funding to advance its technology, expand manufacturing and accelerate commercialization across robotics, embodied AI and healthcare.
The round was led by VMS Group, with Bayland Capital also participating. Ommo's system uses permanent magnets and miniature magnetic sensors to determine a device's three-dimensional position and orientation without requiring a direct line of sight. The company says its technology can deliver sub-millimeter positioning accuracy.
Magnetic Tracking Gives Robots More Precise Position Data
Ommo's approach is designed for situations where cameras, traditional tracking systems or mechanical encoders can struggle. A rotating permanent magnet generates a distinct magnetic field, while small sensors detect the field and algorithms calculate six degrees of freedom, covering both position and orientation.
The sensors can be embedded into tools or robotic components, allowing systems to track movement even when parts are blocked from view. Ommo says its magnetometers can be as small as 0.8 millimeters, making the technology suitable for applications where conventional tracking hardware would be difficult to install.
Technology Targets Embodied AI and Manufacturing
The company is targeting embodied AI applications, where robots need accurate information about their own movements and interactions with physical objects. Precise positioning can be particularly useful for humanoid robots and robotic manipulators performing tasks such as gripping, assembly and other fine movements.
Ommo is also developing applications for advanced manufacturing. Its positioning platform can operate without line-of-sight, which could allow robots and tools to be tracked inside confined or obstructed environments. The company describes the technology as a spatial layer that can provide physical-world data to intelligent machines.
Healthcare Remains an Early Commercial Focus
Healthcare is another major target for the company. Ommo has developed magnetic tracking technology for medical and surgical applications, where precise positioning can be critical for navigation and intervention.
The company's existing platform is designed for applications including surgical navigation, dental procedures and medical robotics. Ommo says it has built its technology around the requirements of medical-device development and is working with partners in the sector.
The new funding gives Ommo additional resources to move from specialised tracking systems toward a broader spatial-intelligence platform. Its ability to combine small sensors, wireless operation and precise six-degree-of-freedom tracking could determine how widely the technology is adopted in robotics and other physical AI systems.
