Tencent Launches Hy4 Open-Weight AI Model With Visual Reasoning Capabilities

Tencent Hy4 open-weight AI model introducing visual understanding and mathematical reasoning capabilities.

Tencent has introduced Hy4, its latest flagship open-weight artificial intelligence model, adding visual understanding and reasoning capabilities to its AI portfolio. Announced on November 4, 2026, the model can process images, analyse complex charts and perform visual mathematical reasoning. Tencent is also bringing Hy4 into an updated version of its workplace AI platform, WorkBuddy.

The launch comes as Chinese technology companies increase their efforts to compete in the global open-weight AI market. Tencent is positioning Hy4 as a model capable of supporting more advanced AI applications while strengthening its enterprise software ecosystem.

Hy4 Introduces Visual Understanding and Reasoning

Hy4 marks the first time Tencent has introduced visual understanding capabilities into its AI model lineup. According to the company, the model can interpret visual information, analyse complex charts and solve mathematical problems that require reasoning based on visual inputs.

These capabilities could make the model useful for tasks involving data interpretation, document analysis and mathematical problem-solving. Instead of relying entirely on text-based prompts, users can provide visual information for the model to examine and interpret.

Tencent described Hy4 as one of the strongest open-weight models currently available. However, the company acknowledged that the model still falls behind leading closed-source AI systems in several demanding areas, including research-level mathematics, long-horizon coding, model self-improvement and advanced visual question answering.

This distinction is important because performance across individual capabilities does not necessarily indicate that a model can match the overall performance of more advanced proprietary systems.

Tencent Integrates Hy4 Into WorkBuddy

Alongside the model's introduction, Tencent is updating WorkBuddy, its workplace AI tool, with Hy4. The integration is intended to strengthen the platform's capabilities through the model's improved reasoning and visual understanding features.

The move also reflects Tencent's strategy of connecting its AI development with its existing enterprise software ecosystem. By bringing its latest model into a workplace product, the company can extend AI-assisted capabilities to business users and organisations.

The integration gives Hy4 a practical role beyond model development, placing it within Tencent's broader efforts to expand AI adoption across its services.

Competition Intensifies in the Open-Weight AI Market

Tencent's Hy4 launch comes amid growing competition among Chinese AI developers, including DeepSeek, Z.ai and Alibaba. These companies are developing models with increasingly advanced reasoning and agentic capabilities, challenging established providers in the international AI market.

Open-weight models have become an important part of this competition because they allow developers to access model weights and build customised applications. This offers businesses and researchers greater flexibility in deploying AI systems, although the degree of access and licensing conditions can vary between models.

For Tencent, Hy4 represents an effort to strengthen its position in this rapidly developing market. Its visual reasoning capabilities and WorkBuddy integration provide two areas through which the company aims to expand its AI offering.

However, Tencent's own assessment indicates that further improvements are needed to compete with leading closed-source systems in some advanced tasks. Hy4's performance in practical deployments and its adoption by developers will be important factors in determining its position among competing open-weight models.
