Anthropic Brings Claude Inference to India Through Amazon Bedrock
Claude Inference Goes Live in India
Anthropic has brought in-country inference for its Claude AI models to India through Amazon Bedrock, allowing requests sent through the India endpoint to be processed on servers within the country. The capability is aimed particularly at financial institutions, government bodies and large enterprises handling sensitive workloads.
The launch means organisations using the India endpoint can keep Claude prompts and responses within India's AWS infrastructure instead of relying on processing outside the country. Amazon Bedrock provides the infrastructure and access layer for the deployment, giving enterprises a local option as they move AI systems from testing into production.
Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 Available
The India deployment covers Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Haiku 4.5. AWS says its India geographic inference profile routes requests between its Mumbai and Hyderabad regions, keeping the inference process within India while allowing workloads to draw capacity from both locations.
This setup is different from simply making Claude accessible to Indian users. Claude was already available in India through Amazon Bedrock, including global cross-Region inference. The new geographic capability specifically addresses organisations that require inference processing to remain inside India's borders.
Data Residency Becomes a Key Enterprise Requirement
Data residency is becoming an important consideration for organisations deploying AI in regulated environments. Banks, insurers, government agencies and large enterprises may need to keep sensitive information within specific geographic boundaries because of regulatory, contractual or internal governance requirements.
Anthropic said local inference was a recurring request from Indian organisations. Irina Ghose, Managing Director of Anthropic India, said customers in regulated sectors and government wanted to use Claude for critical workloads while having requests processed within the country.
Claude deployments through Amazon Bedrock also provide audit trails and access controls intended for risk and compliance teams evaluating AI systems for production use.
India Becomes a Major Claude Market
Anthropic says India is one of its largest markets and has a particularly strong developer community. According to reporting from The Times of India, India is the company's second-largest market for Claude.ai, while software development accounts for 45.2% of work-related tasks users bring to Claude in the country.
Claude adoption has also expanded beyond individual developers. Companies across banking, payments, IT services, healthcare, science and public services are using the technology. TCS is reportedly equipping 50,000 associates with Claude, while Infosys is integrating the model with its Topaz platform.
AWS Provides the Local Infrastructure
AWS's India geographic cross-Region inference profile uses the Mumbai and Hyderabad regions. Requests can move between those two regions, but AWS says the India profile does not route them outside the country. This gives organisations access to a larger local capacity pool while maintaining the geographic processing requirement.
For Anthropic, the move strengthens its position in a market where enterprises are increasingly looking beyond AI pilots. Keeping inference inside India removes one potential barrier for organisations that cannot use externally processed AI workloads for sensitive applications.
