CtrlS and Ciena Build 100 Tb/s Network Across Indian Data Centers

CtrlS and Ciena optical network connecting Indian data centers for AI and cloud workloads

Indian data-center operator CtrlS Datacenters is working with Ciena to deploy five metro optical networks across India, connecting nine data centers in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, New Delhi and Noida. The networks are designed to provide up to 100 Tb/s of capacity, supporting the growing bandwidth requirements of AI and cloud workloads.

The deployment uses Ciena’s optical networking technology to create high-capacity connections between CtrlS facilities. The company says the infrastructure is intended to provide the scalability and performance needed as hyperscalers and enterprises increase their use of data-intensive applications.

Five Metro Networks Connect Nine Data Centers

The planned infrastructure will span five major Indian technology hubs. The networks will connect CtrlS data centers across Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, New Delhi and Noida, creating high-capacity metro links between facilities.

This connectivity is designed to allow data to move between data centers efficiently while supporting applications that require high bandwidth and low-latency connections.

Ciena Technology Supports 100 Tb/s Capacity

The networks will use Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optical technology, which is designed for high-capacity data transmission over fiber networks. Ciena says the technology can support up to 1.6 Tb/s wavelengths, enabling operators to increase capacity without proportionally increasing the amount of fiber infrastructure required.

For CtrlS, the technology will provide a scalable optical layer that can be expanded as traffic requirements increase.

AI Drives Data-Center Bandwidth Demand

The project comes as AI workloads place increasing pressure on data-center networks. Training and deploying large AI models involves moving substantial volumes of data between computing systems, storage infrastructure and geographically distributed facilities.

Cloud services, high-performance computing and AI applications are therefore increasing demand for faster connections between data centers. High-capacity optical networks can help operators handle this traffic while connecting multiple facilities within metropolitan regions.

Infrastructure Targets Hyperscaler Requirements

CtrlS is positioning the new networks to support hyperscalers and other high-bandwidth customers operating across its data-center footprint. The company operates data centers in several of India's major technology and business markets.

The five-network deployment is expected to give CtrlS greater flexibility in managing traffic between its facilities while creating additional capacity for customers running increasingly demanding cloud and AI applications.

India’s Data-Center Expansion Needs Faster Connectivity

India's data-center market is expanding as businesses shift more workloads to cloud platforms and demand for AI computing grows. That expansion requires not only additional server and power capacity but also high-performance connectivity between facilities.

The CtrlS-Ciena deployment highlights how optical networking is becoming an important part of this infrastructure buildout. By connecting nine data centers with networks capable of reaching 100 Tb/s, the companies are preparing the infrastructure for rising data traffic across India's rapidly growing digital ecosystem.
