Duracell Opens $56 Million Global Battery Innovation Centre in Atlanta
Duracell has officially opened its new $56 million Global Innovation Center for Research and Development in Atlanta, establishing a major hub for battery technology research and development. Located at Science Square Labs next to Georgia Tech, the 83,000-square-foot facility will bring scientists, engineers and other teams together to work on battery materials, cell design, testing and device performance. The center is expected to create 120 jobs and become the central anchor of Duracell’s global battery innovation network.
The facility officially opened on October 6 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by representatives from Duracell, the City of Atlanta, the State of Georgia and Georgia Tech. The new center is designed to move battery technologies from initial concepts through development and commercialization.
New Hub Brings Battery Research to Atlanta
The Global Innovation Center is located at 101 Nerem Street NW within Science Square, an 18-acre innovation district developed alongside Georgia Tech. Its proximity to the university gives Duracell access to academic researchers, emerging companies and a wider pool of scientific and engineering talent.
Inside the facility, teams will work across materials science, cell design, laboratory prototyping and device characterization. Duracell says the setup is intended to accelerate improvements in battery performance, quality and safety while supporting the company’s global R&D operations.
Connecting Research With Manufacturing
The Atlanta center also strengthens the connection between Duracell’s research, manufacturing and distribution operations in Georgia. The company has operated a battery manufacturing facility in LaGrange for decades and has a distribution center in Fairburn that began operating in 2020.
The new R&D hub is expected to create a more connected development pipeline, allowing research teams to work closer to the company’s existing operations. Its location near Georgia Tech is also intended to support collaboration between industry and academic researchers.
Duracell Expands Its Innovation Footprint
Duracell relocated its global R&D operations to metro Atlanta from Bethel, Connecticut, as part of a broader investment announced by Georgia in 2025. Employees began working at Science Square Labs in August 2026 ahead of the official opening ceremony.
The investment comes as battery technology becomes increasingly important across consumer electronics and energy-related applications. By placing its R&D headquarters within Atlanta’s growing science and technology ecosystem, Duracell is positioning the facility as a key part of its next generation of battery development.
