NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 Returns to Earth After More Than Seven Months on ISS

SpaceX Dragon Freedom spacecraft carrying the four Crew-12 astronauts splashes down in the Pacific Ocean off California on October 8, 2026.

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 mission concluded on October 8, 2026, after four astronauts safely returned to Earth aboard the Dragon spacecraft Freedom. The spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Los Angeles at 8:34 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, bringing the crew’s extended stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to an end.

The returning crew comprised NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. They spent more than seven months living and working in orbit, conducting scientific investigations and supporting operations aboard the space station.

Four Astronauts Complete Extended ISS Mission

Recovery teams aboard SpaceX vessels secured the spacecraft after splashdown and began the process of bringing the astronauts ashore. The crew was scheduled to undergo standard postflight medical checks before returning to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The mission also marked the first spaceflight for Hathaway and Adenot, while Meir and Fedyaev returned to space for their second missions. Meir’s time aboard Crew-12 brought her cumulative time in space to 440 days, according to NASA.

Science and Space Station Operations

During their stay, the astronauts contributed to scientific research in microgravity and helped maintain the ISS as an active orbital laboratory. Investigations conducted aboard the station support research into human health, biological processes and technologies that could be used in future space exploration.

The crew also carried out four spacewalks during the mission, supporting maintenance and other work in orbit. Research samples and equipment returning with the astronauts can provide scientists with material for further analysis on Earth.

Why the Return Matters

Crew-12’s safe return demonstrates the role of NASA’s commercial crew programme in maintaining regular astronaut transportation to and from the ISS. SpaceX provides the Dragon spacecraft and launch services, while NASA works with international partners to sustain research and operations in low Earth orbit.

The mission’s conclusion also NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 mission ended on October 8 after four astronauts safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast. The crew spent more than seven months aboard the International Space Station, supporting scientific investigations, station operations and research relevant to future space missions. a transition in station activities, as the remaining crew continues work aboard the orbital laboratory. The scientific results from Crew-12’s investigations will contribute to ongoing research and preparations for longer-duration missions beyond low Earth orbit.
